Four of my favorite fantasy subgenres

High fantasy
Long journeys, epic battles, kingdoms, and civilizations with interesting languages make up this subgenre. Some famous examples are Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, which are also my favorites. Even though these stories are worth thousands of pages, they're so exciting that I end up finishing the books in less than a week. The storyline can get intense and gory sometimes but all the time spent is always worth it.
Children's fantasy
I love how children's fantasy doesn't just appeal to its target market. I appreciate this subgenre because it encourages jaded adults like me to think outside of the box. And of course, the lessons on family, friendship, and heroism always resonate with kids of all ages. If you've read Harry Potter and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz then you know what I mean.

Comic fantasy
Now and then I search for fun reads that will take my mind off stressful things. As a fantasy reader, I enjoy this subgenre because coming up with a fantastic and funny narrative story can be a challenge. Thankfully, we have literary masters like Terry Pratchett (Discworld) to deliver out-of-this-world, laugh-out-loud works.
Urban fantasy
City life can get boring. The limited view and the repetitive scenes can get old quick. But when fantasy meets city life, things start to get exciting for the characters and readers. Books such as City of Bones and Neverwhere make us feel that there's more to our monochromatic urban settings.
There's so much to discover in the fantasy genre. Though I've read a lot, I'm still looking forward to picking up clever works from new authors.
